Powerful Earthquake in Russia Sends Tsunami Waves Toward Hawaii and Pacific Nations

July 30, 2025 – Global Alert: A devastating 8.8 magnitude earthquake struck near Russia’s Kamchatka Peninsula early Wednesday, triggering a powerful tsunami that reached parts of Hawaii and sparked widespread evacuation orders across the Pacific Ocean.

Most Powerful Quake in Russia Since 1952

According to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), the quake hit at a shallow depth of 19.3 km, with the epicenter located 119 km southeast of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, a city of over 160,000 people. Russian scientists confirmed it was the strongest earthquake in the region in more than 70 years.

Buildings were damaged in several parts of Kamchatka, including a kindergarten. Local officials confirmed minor injuries but no reported deaths. In Severo-Kurilsk, waves swept into the port, damaging a fish processing facility and several boats.

Tsunami Waves Impact Hawaiian Coastline

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center reported tsunami waves reaching between 1 and 1.2 meters along the shores of Hawaii. Authorities ordered residents to move to higher ground or stay above the fourth floor in buildings within coastal areas.

“Take Immediate Action! Destructive waves approaching,” the Honolulu Emergency Management Department posted on X.

Governor Josh Green confirmed that although the waves caused no serious damage, all flights to and from Maui were suspended as a precautionary measure.

Japan Issues Emergency Warnings

In Japan, memories of the 2011 tsunami disaster resurfaced as sirens rang out across the Pacific coast. Authorities ordered the evacuation of over 50,000 residents, especially in the northern regions of Hokkaido and Fukushima.

Three tsunami waves were recorded, with the largest measuring 1.3 meters. Operations at some Nissan factories were halted, and TEPCO evacuated staff from the Fukushima nuclear plant as a safety precaution.

Global Pacific Tsunami Warning

The U.S. Tsunami Warning System and international agencies issued alerts to multiple countries, warning of potential wave heights between 1 to 3 meters. Affected regions include Chile, Ecuador, Solomon Islands, Alaska, and parts of the U.S. West Coast.

Former President Donald Trump posted on social media: “A tsunami warning is active for Hawaii, and a watch has been issued for Alaska and the U.S. Pacific Coast due to the major quake in the Pacific.”
